When a disaster is declared in Butte or Glenn Counties Caring Choices is activated by the State to serve as an Emergency Volunteer Center. Our job is to process volunteers looking to help during a disaster. The reason for this is so organizations on the ground responding to a disaster are not flooded with volunteers. This can be detrimental to these organizations and hinder the response and recovery efforts, and can possibly be dangerous for volunteers. Being processed through the EVC ensures volunteers are being placed where they are needed most and where their skills and availability aline. The EVC also screens all volunteers and has documents required by the state for all volunteers assisting in disasters must fill out.

If you are interested in volunteer in Disaster relief efforts, see the steps below:

1. Create a volunteer profile on

2. Once Caring Choices is activated head to our Chico office to fill out a Disaster Service Worker Form, please bring a picture ID with you.

3. Have your picture taken and Interview conducted. You will have your picture taken for your volunteer profile and will be interviewed by a staff member or trained volunteer. This is to find the best placement based on your skills and availability.

4. Receive Volunteer Deployment, you will be assigned an organization to volunteer with and will receive all the information you need to start volunteering!

Thank you for your interest in participating in the time of need. At this time, Volunteer Opportunities will be updated regularly and can be found by searching the Opportunity Calendar as well as the list of Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities. Again, please do not self-deploy to impacted areas without proper instruction; a rogue volunteer puts not only themself in danger but also those around them and jeopardizes the entire response.
